Mamo #78: Grinding with the boys

Cinema fans should be in hog heaven this weekend with the release of the Rodriguez/Tarantino double-feature Grindhouse... so where the hell is everyone? Also, Will Smith, Courtney Solomon, and the one film Dakota Fanning can't get sold.

I think the problem with Grindhouse is that there's a limited audience who like these kind of over-the-top genre b-movies. Those who like those type of movies absolutely love them, but it's still a small audience. Looking at the lack of success of Snakes on a Plane, Slither and other such movies, I never thought Grindhouse would do very well.

Also I think had Death Proof been released on it's own and if it was simply advertised as the next Quentin Tarantino movie, similar to Kill Bill, it would have done a lot better. However, packaged with Planet Terror and advertised as a tribute to the old cheesy genre movies, seemed to have scared away a lot of people who would normally like a Tarantino movie.
