Mamo #96: Reacted

The boys are back after another rewarding 48 hours to give updates on everything that's happened to them since the last time. Many films are discussed, and coffee is most definitely consumed.

Oh my god, that saturation comment was genius. I had never thought about that before. Write an article on that and send it to a film journal!

I don't think it's necessarily a new idea, although maybe the idea of an actual colour spectrum across the timeline is new. Who knows. I'll write David Bordwell and if he's never heard of it, I'll ask him to co-author a paper. :)

The desaturation in sc-fi is often used as it's a cheap way to make shots that are supposed to be on another planet "other-worldly". Basically that the sun for that is slightly different than our own causing everything outside to be desaturated. Besides Serenity, I remember seeing it recently also in Battlestar Galactica tv show. I don't think it's ever going to go away, simply because it's a economic way of doing things and looks better than trying to ad some sort of colour filter over all the outside shots.
